Job Responsibilities

The Civil and Structural Clerk of Works is responsible for overseeing and inspecting civil and structural construction activities to ensure compliance with design specifications, safety standards, and quality requirements. This role involves conducting regular site inspections, monitoring progress, maintaining detailed records, coordinating with contractors and stakeholders, and ensuring adherence to relevant regulations and project standards.

Description

Site Inspection and Supervision:

  • Conduct regular site inspections to ensure civil and structural work complies with the approved plans and specifications.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of all structural components, including beams, columns, slabs, walls, and foundations. Ensure that these elements are built according to design specifications and are free from defects or damage.
  • Monitor work progress and quality to ensure it adheres to contractual requirements and standards.
  • Identify and report any discrepancies or issues to the relevant parties.

Quality Control:

  • Verify that construction materials and workmanship meet required standards and specifications.
  • Assess the condition of materials used in construction, such as concrete, steel, and wood, to ensure they are not deteriorated and are performing as expected
  • Ensure that all construction activities comply with safety regulations and quality assurance procedures.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including daily site reports, inspection logs, and test results.
  • Prepare and submit reports on the progress of civil and structural works, highlighting any issues or delays

Coordination and Communication:

  • Act as a liaison between the contractor, project manager, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth project execution.
  • Collaborate with structural engineers to address identified issues and ensure that corrective measures are effectively designed and implemented
  • Attend project meetings and provide updates on civil and structural work

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all construction activities are in compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Monitor and enforce safety procedures on-site to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Identify and analyze any potential safety risks or issues resulting from structural deficiencies or non-compliance with standards and recommend corrective actions.

Defect Identification and Resolution:

  • Identify and document defects or non-conformities in construction work.
  • Work with contractors to resolve issues and ensure that corrective actions are implemented

Inspection of Works:

  • Conduct inspections of completed work before it is covered up or concealed.
  • Ensure that all works are completed in accordance with design requirements and project specifications.
  • Perform follow-up inspections to confirm that corrective actions or repairs have been completed properly and that structural integrity has been restored

Education & Qualification

  • Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering: A relevant diploma or bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering is often required.
  • Construction Management or Building Studies: Qualifications in construction management or building studies may also be relevant, depending on the job requirements.

Relevant Experience & Years of Service

  • Minimum 5-10 years of work experience. This includes substantial experience in site supervision, quality control, coordination of civil and structural projects, demonstrating extensive knowledge and experience in overseeing large-scale or complex projects.

Technical Skills & Professional Knowledge

  • The Civil and Structural Clerk of Works must possess strong technical skills in site inspection, quality control, and understanding construction materials and methods.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural and structural drawings, using construction software, and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations is crucial.
  • Additionally, they need a solid grasp of building codes, construction contracts, and project management principles.
  • Knowledge of modern construction techniques and legal standards further supports their role in maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
